Description
What is GBR or GABA Rice?Â
GABA rice is simply brown rice sprouted (or germinated). Many don’t know that brown rice can be sprouted. We all know that whole grains/pulses (unpolished or unprocessed) are beneficial for our health due to the higher nutritional value when compared with processed or polished grains. Whole grains and pulses when sprouted have additional health benefits. Proper preparation of whole grains prior to cooking is an important process to get the maximum health benefit out of them.
Germinated brown rice (or GBR ) is also known as GABA rice. GBR is one of the best sources of natural GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) an amino acid produced in the brain, which acts as a neurotransmitter – a chemical that fosters communication between nerve cells – and helps to keep stress-related nerve impulses at bay. GABA encourages mental and emotional well being, promotes relaxation and sleep.
Benefits of GABA Rice
Germinated Brown Rice is also rich in vitamin E, vitamin B group, magnesium, and fiber. It also contains more bioactive components, such as ferulic acid and γ-oryzanol. This healing food has numerous benefits and its daily consumption aids in fat loss promotes sound sleep and boosts immunity. It is one of the best foods in the prevention and management of lifestyle diseases like cancer, diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, anxiety & neurological disorders.
GBR is evaluated as a functional food because it is good for digestion and absorption. Dried GBR offers an excellent appearance, improved shelf life, and handling ease. Unlike white rice, GBR provides more sweetness, excellent taste, has better texture, and is easier to cook.
The process of germination enhances the bio-availability of nutrients by neutralizing phytic acid. Consumption of unsprouted grains can lead to poor absorption of nutrients in the grain. The incompletely digested proteins can irritate the intestines, leading to inflammation and allergic reactions. Neutralizing the phytic acid, releasing the proteins, vitamins, and enzymes allow these important nutrients to be absorbed during digestion.

I recently made the switch to Germinated Brown Rice, and it’s been a game-changer for my meals. The texture is perfect—chewy yet tender—and it has a subtle, nutty flavor that really enhances dishes. I appreciate that it’s not just tasty but also packed with nutrients like vitamins and GABA. I’ve felt more balanced and less stressed since incorporating it into my diet. It’s a bit pricier than regular rice, but the health benefits make it worth the investment. I highly recommend it!

Since I started eating it regularly, I’ve noticed a positive change in my energy levels and overall well-being. It’s definitely a bit more expensive, but the benefits are worth it.
